The one piece of advice everyone gave me about food before I went to Iceland was “you have to eat the hot dogs!” Apparently Scandinavian hot dogs are somewhat of a must-eat, and I had never heard about this before. I knew it would be a tough sell because my husband, Colby, despises hot dogs, but I knew it was something we had to do.

Baejarins Beztu Pylsur in Reykjavik, Iceland | Hot dogs in Reykjavik, IcelandLucky for me, hot dogs were one of the cheapest things to eat around Reykjavik, so it wasn’t too hard to convince Colby that we should try it out. With a little Google search, we figured out that Baejarins Beztu Pylsur was the original hot dog stand – started in 1937! – and is kind of a rite of passage for travelers, so we headed there after a long day of exploring. Just one guy was manning the booth alone, taking orders, building hot dogs, and cooking them up all at the same time.

In Iceland, hot dogs are traditionally a lamb base mixed with a little bit of pork and beef. I was hesitant about this part because lamb is usually not one of my favorite things, but in Iceland it’s actually very mild and yummy. The hot dogs are then topped with ketchup, sweet mustard, remoulade, raw onions, and crispy fried onions.

We both got two with everything and sat down at the picnic table beside the stand to dig in.

Baejarins Beztu Pylsur in Reykjavik, Iceland | Hot dogs in Reykjavik, IcelandI can confidently say I’ve never had a better hot dog. The hot dog itself was delicious, but my favorite part was the crunchiness of the fried onions. Alongside the other toppings, they added the perfect crunch to really make you enjoy eating the hot dog as a whole. Even if you don’t like onions, or mustard, or any of the other ingredients, you definitely need to try at least one with everything to get the whole experience! It’s a must do if you’re traveling to Iceland, for sure.
