I love spring and summer in Napa Wine Country when the vines are full of grapes and Napa Valley glows in the sun. While you may be tempted to spend your whole day in the city of Napa, I recommend driving further north to the charming downtown of St. Helena.
Located right on St. Helena’s Main Street, Archetype is a wonderful choice for brunch. Grab a seat in the warm, daylit greenhouse seating area or sit in the main dining room. The restaurant is designed by Archetype founder and architect Howard Backen.
While the space is beautiful, the food equally shines. From their Eye Openers, we started with the half stack of lemon-ricotta pancakes with blueberry syrup and almond butter. We admit that we scraped the plate, including all the blueberry sauce, clean. My girlfriends and I could’ve eaten a whole stack, but there are plenty of other options on their menu worth saving room to try.

The hen of the woods mushroom pizza was simple yet delicious. Hen of the woods is one of my favorite types of mushrooms. The pizza bears the signature char from their wood grill and oven.
For those that like the sweet and savory combination of chicken waffles, try the liberty farm duck confit and buttermilk waffle topped with sunnyside duck egg and cherry compote. I preferred the dish without the tart cherry compote and with butter and syrup.

The sugared donut holes are also highly recommended for dessert, but we decided to get gelato elsewhere on Main Street. We’ll have to return another time for brunch or dinner to try their other dishes, such as the donut holes and the whole grilled artichoke.
Please keep in mind that Archetype features local, seasonal ingredients so menu offerings may be different when you visit.
