The 10 Best Vegan Restaurants in San Antonio
10.Hopdoddy Burger Bar
This Austin-based chain known for its burgers and shakes probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when searching for the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio. But after trying vegan burgers all over the city, we were left thinking “Hopdoddy does it better”. They have two plant-based patty options — the well-known Impossible Burger and the Soul Patty made with vegetable protein, rice, millet, carrots, and garam masala. Their whole wheat bun is vegan along with their mustard-grilled onions, balsamic oregano vinaigrette, chipotle Ketchup, potato hay, poblanos, caramelized peppers & onions, salsa roja, pimento relish, smoked vegan gouda, field mushrooms, and of course all the greens you’d expect at a good burger joint. When you order a vegan burger at Hopdoddy, it will be cooked in a dedicated and separated area of the grill that no meat is cooked on. So if it’s a burger you’re craving, come here and pile it all on. Oh, and don’t forget the fries! Sweet potato or regular…..or honestly, just get both.
9. Thyme For Lunch
While Thyme For Lunch’s menu is not exclusively vegan, we really love the plant-based offerings they do have, which is why we’ve included them in our list of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio. With ingredients that are always fresh and inspired by exotic flavors from around the world, you’ll find sandwiches, wraps, bowls, and even vegan french toast here. For something warm, go with their undeniably delicious Fajita Bowl. For refreshing and crunchy, their stacked “Awesome Rawsome” raw veggie sandwich hits the spot.
8. Jugo Juicery
A list of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio wouldn’t be complete without Jugo Juicery. Jugo Juicery specializes in fresh juice, superfood bowls, and smoothies and is a great stop for a light lunch or guilt-free dessert. Their juice is fresh and available daily until it’s gone and the bowls and smoothies are completely customizable. Whatever you do, don’t leave without a superfood bowl! Choose from a handful of exciting base options for your bowl (matcha, acai, pitaya, activated charcoal, or blue majik), then select three fruit toppings and two superfood toppings. If you don’t know where to start, we recommend the pitaya base with kiwi, pineapple, blueberries, cocoa nibs, and coconut flakes. You can thank us later!
7. Tarka Indian Kitchen
Tarka Indian Kitchen is a fabulous, fast-casual Indian restaurant with a menu that boasts plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Start with the Vegetable Samosas and Roti Flatbread, then do your best to choose between these three favorites: Aloo Gobi (braised cauliflower and potatoes cooked with a fragrant blend of spices), Coconut Curry (smooth onion sauce infused with fresh ginger and garlic, finished with coconut milk and potatoes), and Channa Masala (garbanzo bean curry with sautéed onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and cilantro). Also a huge bonus, Tarka Indian Kitchen shares a parking lot with Trader Joes. Just another reason why this fresh, flavorful eatery deserves a spot on our list of best vegan restaurants in San Antonio.
6. Señor Veggie
Searching for a standout spot in Southtown serving up vegan fare with a Tex-Mex flare? Look no further than Señor Veggie. From eggplant tortas and jackfruit carnitas to pan-smoked seitan BBQ and tempeh chorizo papusas, this plant-based eatery is equal parts creative and delicious. While there is no shortage of freshness at Señor Veggie, they can also fulfill that greasy spoon craving if you’re in need of a crunchy sandwich with fries on the side (don’t skip their amazing house-made ketchup either). We’re not sure how two of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio landed in Southtown, but we’re not mad about it.
5. Green Vegetarian Cuisine
An incredible, all-vegetarian restaurant with plenty of vegan options and the ability to make many other items vegan. That’s what you’ll find at Green Vegetarian Cuisine, one of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio. Each dish here is loaded with savory flavors like garlic, avocado, mushroom or sesame, making sure you get that satisfying umami flavor profile. Our favorites? The Mediterranean Bowl, filled with falafel, kale salad, pecan hummus, dolmas, vegan tzatziki, carrots, and tomatoes or their Bulgogi Wrap that has all the tang, spiciness and mouthfeel you’d expect from a Korean bbq wrap. Green Vegetarian Cuisine’s menu has more than enough versatility and flavor to keep you coming back.
One of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio for vegans to bring their meat-eating friends. The Cove is a local, sustainable, organic restaurant that provides omnivores and herbivores with great food. Their menu is a smorgasbord of options from great beef burgers to tempeh tacos, vegan soft serve, and jackfruit bbq. They also have an amazing outdoor space for groups and families to spread out and a playground to entertain the kids. Parking is a bit tricky in their lot, but there is extra space in the surrounding areas and it’s definitely worth the effort.
3. Thai Vegan
All the awesome flavors you’d expect from Thai food, just made vegan. The majority of the flavors in Thai cooking come from plants, herbs, and spices already, so an amazing Thai place that is 100% vegan just makes so much sense. Thai Vegan’s curry is on point and the P.E.T (pumpkin, eggplant, tofu stir-fried in garlic sauce with bell pepper, basil and chili) is also a huge winner in our book. There are so many options here, from soups and curries to noodles and skewered satay appetizers, so definitely bring a crowd of people with you and plan to share. Thai Vegan is well-deserving of a spot on our list of the best vegan restaurants in San Antonio.
Our second spot tucked away in Southtown, Viva Vegeria serves up awesome local, organic, Mexican-inspired food that is also totally vegan and gluten-free. You can’t go wrong with their crispy, marinated, carrot dog taquitos and cauliflower buffalo bites. Their jalapeño beet salad is sweet, spicy, fresh, and crunchy and their nachos are giant and totally hit the spot. Gooey cheese, perfectly seasoned beans, delicious veggies piled on a volcanic mountain of fresh tortilla chips…what more can we say except YES, PLEASE!
Our absolute favorite spot for vegan food in the Alamo City: Pharm Table! While not exclusively vegan, most of their food offerings are presented that way, with the option of adding a protein. Their menu changes with the seasons and is completely organic, local, and gluten-free. If you’ve ever been skeptical of what veggies, grains, seeds, and nuts can do, book it to Pharm Table, where plates look like food rainbows and you’ll want to give yourself a hug after eating such deliciousness. Favorites are the Farm-to-Table Tacos and the Quinoa Tamal Bowl. The impressive treatment of plants, calming ambiance, and killer brunch options make Pharm Table the best vegan restaurant in San Antonio, hands down.
