Food events speak to me. They do! Whether I’m learning how to cook new recipes or discovering popular local restaurants, I live and breathe for these events. Savory Salt Lake is an event that the popular radio station, KUER, puts on every year. Filled with great local eateries and award-winning chefs, this event is something that every food lover craves to attend. Held at the Tower at Rice Eccles Stadium and filled with appreciative eaters like me, tickets sell out quick each year and for a good reason.
Imagine some of the top restaurants around giving out a sample of their favorite, speciality dishes. The best part? You get to try them all!! Two floors filled with savory and sweet dishes. All different and unique, yet satisfying and incredible. Everyone gets three coins to vote for their best dish; and let me tell you, it was very difficult to choose. How was I supposed to choose from each of these incredible, yet distinct and unique goodies? I’m already the most indecisive person that has walked the earth, so you can imagine how difficult this was for me (yet exciting and fun at the same time, fortunately.)
The celebrity judges included Edible Wasatch’s Vanessa Chang, KUER’s Doug Fabrizio, and NPR’s Kelly McEvers. These individuals all know their ways with food. Along with the award for best dish of the night, these three conclusively selected their favorites as well.
The first level was filled with savory eats from Provisions, Eva, SLC POP, The Tree Room at Sundance, Mazza, HSL Restaurant, Urban Pioneer Foods, Salt Bistro at The Leonardo Museum, Zest Kitchen & Bar, Riverhorse on Main, and Tin Angel. Each chef brought their own flare and mastered their dish with simplicity and authenticity.
The second level treated us with the sweet eats from Cakes de Fleur, Amour Cafe, Sugared Caramel Candy, Culinary Crafts, The Big O Doughnuts, and The Chocolate Conspiracy. Dessert is hard to master, yet these guys know exactly what they’re doing.
So as you can imagine, this night was simply idealistic. Palettes were satisfied, hard work was appreciated, and quality was recognized. Who were the winners you might ask? (Drum roll please.) For Savory: Eva | Sweet: Amour Cafe. The judges also got to pick their top favorites as well – Savory: HSL Restaurant | Sweet: Amour Cafe.
In my opinion, everyone did an amazing job. The presentations were impeccable and the food tasted even better. I can’t wait to go out and try every restaurant that attended. Thank you KUER for throwing this event for us food lovers like me. We can’t wait for next year!
