It was not too long ago that I was introduced to the concept of “drinking chocolate”. Don’t get me wrong, I love nothing more than a warm and creamy glass of hot chocolate, but this cup of (literal) cocoa is a step above the rest. Although drinking chocolate still usually has some sort of creamer or milk, its great flavor and taste comes from two things: a) chocolate b) more chocolate. I’ve scouted out three of my favorites in SLC for all of those below freezing days ahead of us. Cheers.
La Barba Coffee Roasters
The first glass of drinking chocolate I ever had. Their beverages are filled with dark and bitter chocolate- juuuuust the way I like it. In truth, I crave this more than any dessert or sweet item in the Salt Lake Valley (just ask my husband). If you’re up for a snack, order some of Finca’s house made churros with dipping sauces. Life changing.

Caputo’s 15th & 15th
I was delighted to see drinking chocolate in yet another SLC establishment and was even more pleased to hear that they’re using the same local artisan chocolate as La Barba (Solstice Chocolate) to make it!! Caputo’s does their drinking chocolate a little lighter and a little less bitter, for those who aren’t as die-hard. It was ENORMOUS and creamy and the perfect accompaniment to my dreamy breakfast sammy.

Hatch Family Chocolates
Hatch just knows how to make anything “chocolate” taste excellent. Quite literally, this drink is liquid chocolate. It is rich and thick and everything that an ultimate chocolate lover would want in a beverage. They have 3 different flavors including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or vegan. Right in my neck of the woods and open til 10:30 p.m.

Sitting in my Socal comfy 80 winter degrees but no matter – am still always in for a little warm chocolate sippy!

Loooove it! I’m the type of person that is ALWAYS cold so I’m there with you. Warm socks, blankets, and drinking chocolate all year long. 🙂

Okay so is all drinking chocolate bitter? I like dark chocolate but tried out Caputos today and it was breath bitter. Had to go home and add some stevia extract and cinnamon sugar when got home.
Chanel
I meant pretty bitter.

Hi Chanel! It is DEFINITELY bitter and that’s a lot of the reason why I love it! If you want something on the rich and creamy side head to Hatch Family Chocolates in the aves 🙂

It would be awesome if you did a hot chocolate post. Maybe the best ones just in slc? Or Utah in general?
