Orange County: The Pie Hole

I think every once in awhile, real food should be substituted with pie.  I don’t care how old you are or what next diet craze you’re on.  And if you don’t like pie, well, then I’m sorry, you shouldn’t be trusted.

The Pie Hole originated in Downtown Los Angeles, but have begun to expand into the Orange County area.

I recently visited The Pie Hole in Orange, CA that is located in what they call the Orange Circle in the historic Old Towne.

Their menu consists of handmade sweet and savory pies featuring almost everything from the traditional Mom’s Apple Crumble to the more extreme Mexican Chocolate Pie.  But if your mood is leaning more towards savory than sweet, the menu holds mouthwatering creations such as Chicken ‘n’ Cornbread and Chorizo Breakfast Hand Pie.  See, I told you there was a pie for breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, dinner, and that meal you eat in between 10pm and 3am.

The Mac ‘n’ Cheese Pie was a must for me to try, as well as their seasonal rhubarb.  And just to cover all the major food groups, I even tried the Salted Caramel Pecan.

The pies come in their own mini pie pan plate (just the way I like it), and yes, it’s adorable.

The Mac ‘n’ Cheese pie can only be described as a round, melt-in-your-mouth, buttery, brown crust filled with ooey, gooey, cheesy noodles.

I washed that down alternating between the delicious summer in a pie, that is the rhubarb, and the not too sweet, wonderful rich nutty flavor of the Salted Caramel Pecan.

To top off the visit, the shop’s manager, Julian, made me feel right at home welcoming me and describing each of the pies’ ingredients.  He even sent me on my way with one of their chocolate chip salted cookies that I’m considering having as my wedding cake.

Not in the OC? No worries. You can find their other locations in The Arts District in Downtown LA, in Pasadena, and rumor has it, coming to Newport Beach in Orange County! Happy pie eating!
