San Antonio: The Cove. Sustainable, organic, local burgers, tacos and salads.

I’m not sure if I’m on a burger kick recently or if I’m just gravitating to places that have huge open areas so I relax a little more when eating with my littles around. Probably a bit of both but thank the food gods that San Antonio is literally chock full of restaurants with high quality grub in a family friendly atmosphere. The Cove is home to all these things plus an emphasis on sustainable, organic, local food + live music and a stellar atmosphere. Win. Win. Win.

The Cove’s menu is loaded with crafty burgers with abundant vegan and gluten free options. With those, a hand full of salads, fresh cut fries and of course a few tacos. I would say they excel in the burger section, throwing on ingredients like roasted red peppers, smokey tamarind sauce, cotija cheese and the list goes on and on. It’s a good reflection of this region of Texas which has a grounded and honest feeling to it. I love when I can tell from a myriad of angles that the food I’m eating is from and inspired by the region I’m in.

Spicy means spicy so make sure to ask for sauce on the side if you’re sensitive to that. I have yet to find a burger I didn’t like here. From the Texas burger – topped with refried beans, corn chips, grilled onions, cheddar, avocado and salsa to their Chilango burger – topped with avocado, red onions, tomato, oaxaca cheese and smokey tamarind sauce. They also make a really great traditional burger if you’re a purist or just craving the goodness of a simple American classic.

With access to such great produce it would be sad to not offer a couple of salads as tribute to earthy goodness. This is their kale avocado spinach salad but my fav is their warm beet salad with goat cheese and walnuts. Both are gluten free and vegetarian and also filling, delicious and well rounded in the flavor department.

There is plenty of room in the air conditioned interior but twice as much room on their spacious and fun patio. Long picnic tables and a playground make it inviting to just about everyone in the neighborhood. They often have fun seasonal items on their menu so going often always gives you something new to try and their live music is a great ambiance bonus.
